When purchasing a garage door for a new garage at home or for replacing an old one, it is important to consider the garage door sizes, type and quality. Without it, we may end up buying a useless garage door and wasting our money.

In determining the size of our door, we first measure the width (usually on the opening) because garage door sizes almost always comes in width size first (ex. 8×7 ft door size means the width is 8 and the height is 7 ft).

To have an idea of standard garage door sizes, look at the different dimensions below:

Single car door size

The sizes for this type are: 8×7 ft, 9×7 ft, 10×7 ft, 8×8 ft, 9×8 ft and 10×8 ft.

Double car door size

The sizes for this type are: 12 x 7 ft, 14 x 7 ft and 16 x 7 ft. They are also available in 18 x 7 ft, 12 x 8 ft, 14 x 8 ft, 16 x 8 ft and 18 x 8 ft.

Golf Cart Size

The usual sizes of golf carts are: 5 x 7 ft, 4 x 8 ft and 6 x 8 ft. there is also a 6 feet wide golf cart size and a 5×6ft.

Apart from getting the garage door sizes, we also need to know the type of material that makes up the door we need for our home. For example, if we want our door to fit and go with the architectural design of our house then we need the wooden type of door because wooden garage doors comes in many designs and type. If we go the practical way and want a secure type of door, we go for the thick steel doors because they are durable, long-lasting and can withstand extreme kinds of temperature and pressure.

The last consideration we must think in purchasing garage doors is the quality of the built and construction. We must carefully scrutinize how the screws and handles were placed. We must make sure that there are no loose screws to prevent the door from falling apart easily and making it a burglar-friendly garage door. We need a secure door to protect our properties behind it. We need a door of the best quality to get our money’s worth.

The size, type and quality of door must be chosen by both you and your partner, ideally. This is for the reason that the garage, although often is a man’s turf, is still a part of the house where the family lives. Security is not a small deal and therefore, all must be vigilant in finding the right door.

Is it possible to soundproof a garage door?

Posted by admin On April - 7 - 20101 COMMENT

This is an automatic steel garage door that is sectional (the most common kind)

What would I use to seal the seams?

Would MDF be good and cheap soundprooding?

If building a second door instead is cheaper is there a way to make this practical to open easily?
I am willing to rebalance the door and maybe get a new spring as it pretty much needs one anyway.

5 Tips On Choosing A Hormann Garage Door

Posted by admin On April - 6 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

When you consider installing a garage door for your house, many contractors will recommend that you get a Hormann. The popularity is perhaps due to the company’s wide range of wooden garage door models, which are best suited for home use. However, before driving off to the builder’s depot and picking out one that “looks nice,” there are a few practical things you should take note about your home and how the door will fit into the picture. Consider these tips:

1. Take Some Vital Measurements – This will help you decide on how the door should open and close. Some door models, particularly the swing-up (or tilt-up) types, will take up a certain amount space when opening and closing. A swing-up garage door will need some horizontal clearance in and outside the garage. A roll-up model requires less space. However, both swing-up and roll-up types will require a certain amount of ceiling clearance. Take note of the available area between the ceiling and the roof of your car. Measure too the space from the door to the closest objects in its path (such as from the back of the car when it is parked inside or any shelves that line the walls). Fumbling with the measuring tape? Hormann representatives and professional installers will gladly help you assess what type of door would fit best.

2. Understand the Garage’s Purpose – Garages today have evolved into a storage room, a work area and tool shed, an artist’s studio, a gym, a hobby den, and sometimes even a cellar. Determine what else is done in the garage. This will help you decide if you would like to bring in more natural light via windows. Perhaps a roll-up door will allow for more activity space and storage area in and outside the garage.

3. It’s About People Too – The door may look breathtakingly high-tech but keep in mind that it should be user-friendly too. Think about who will do the regular maintenance, who uses the garage most often, who holds the remote opener. The technological features must match the user. Check also for special safety features if you have pets, children or seniors in your household.

4. Get a Feel of the Climate – Garage doors come in various materials. However, some materials may not hold up to the weather in your location. Fiberglass doors will crack during the cold, harsh winter months. If you opt for a wooden garage door, look into the design details and see how it will hold up to changes in humidity.

5. Draw Inspiration From the Rest of the House – The garage door, given its size relative to the walls, will definitely draw a good deal of visual attention. And many have made the mistake of picking out a door design that does not quite tie in with the rest of the house. Take pictures of the design of your front door, or any architectural detail from the windows, the porch, or the roof. Bring these photos to the store or keep them handy when you browse through the Hormann catalog. Look for a perfect match in terms of color, panel design and other similar details. An automated garage door is essential in protecting your car, and in certain cases, one of the entryways into your home. But while the charm of a wooden door will initially take you in, it is always important to consider the practical aspects when choosing a particular model.
