I have a steel sectional, overhead garage door that will not hold a coat of paint. It peels and flakes off. How do I get the paint to stay on my door?

You have to use primer, probably 2 coats or more. It is going to have to be a really good primer if you want the paint to stick.

Clean the surface and remove old paint. Then paint with a primer for steel. Then paint it with what you want.

Oil is usually the cause of this. Make sure it is clean, a light scoring – sanding, prime with a metal primer, and paint. or have professional paint it with a warranty!

Sand the whole door with 400 grit sandpaper. This will put small scratches in it that the paint will adhere to. After sanding wipe the whole door down with a paint thinner like naphtha. This will remove any oils that might give you a problem. I would use a good paint like rust-oleum afterwords.

Its all in the PREP work!
    Clean, sand, lean again!
    use good paint!!

If the door has been previously painted, give it a light sanding to roughen the surface. If the door is plain galvanized steel, you need a proper metal primer paint as an undercoat first. Go to a paint shop or a hardware store and tell the resident paint expert what you have and what you want to do.
