Can I install a window into our concrete garage?

Posted by admin On March - 27 - 2010

We have a pre-cast concrete panel garage (here when we moved in). can i install a window into a wall? I’m guessing the panels have steel rods in them, is it ok to cut a hole in to fit a window?
many thanks

yes you can, a diamond saw will do a good job but create a lot of dust, so suggest making a sheet plastic enclosure around area, consider a skylight instead if there is no structure over your garage.

Most cities or towns would require a building permit..I really would’nt worry too much about rebar..You’ll need a concrete saw..which will easily cut the rebar if necessary..The big thing for you is to measure & mark the opening needed for the frame correctly..give yourself a fraction to spare..I usually make initial saw marks on the sides, bottom, & top..hold the frame in place, to be certain it will fit & be “square & level”..then go to it..You can rent or borrow a saw with a diamond blade.
